Thursday, May 6, 2004 9:37pm-I just came back from the broadcasting banquet. It was a very exciting event. Let's see, well, top doc was given to Holly Howard (my top choice), 2nd place was given to Jessica Culbertson (following in her sister's footsteps), and get this-TWO 3rd place doc winners: Kim France & Chelsea Lavin. I was astonished and pleased with these 4 students. They all did a fantastic job on their programs, and deserve all the credit they get. The manager positions were no real surprise: I got radio Station Manager, Adam Mesirow got TV Station Manager, and Jenny Gilbert got Administrative Manager. The person who received the job I had, Community Affairs Director, was Kim France. Only her job entails the duties of the News Director and Community Affairs Director. She in my mind is the best person to fulfill this job. Tracy Calabrese is now the new Program Director for WHFH which is what she wanted so I am happy for her. I can’t remember all the jobs given to each individual, but I will say this, I am not disappointed with any person getting the job they were assigned. Oh, before I forget, I was awarded the Most Valuable Broadcaster (MVB) award. THANK YOU MR. COMSTOCK & MS. TIPTON!!! I was not only surprised to receive this award, but truly honored. I am looking forward to another terrific year in the program, and my goal is to improve the overall program significantly, and I know I have all the help to do this. Congratulations to everyone!!!

Saturday, September 13, 2003 4:02am-It's been a while since I've updated. I would like to announce that the first episode of Close Up aired on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at 6:00pm. The show went very well. You can check the News Archives page to read what the show was about. I'm sorry I didn't inform all of you as to when exactly the first Close Up would air, but the truth is I didn't know when it would air until a couple days prior to Wednesday. Fortunatly, if you missed the first episode of Close Up, you can catch an encore episode on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 4:30pm.
All the best.-Sean Powers, Community Affairs Director, WHFH 88.5FM Flossmoor
Thursday, August 28, 2003 7:16pm-I have a minor change in plans. I decided that I'm going to air the very first Close Up for this year on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 @ 6:00pm Central. I decided to push it back for two reasons. First, things are hectic right now since school just started, and things are getting put together so that the wheels begin to turn. If that makes any sense to you, then great. The other reason I decided to push it back a week later is because I want to begin the show with a 9/11 war special since the week of the 9th is the 2 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The segments that'll be covered on the first episode will incude the 9/11 memorial, a civil war soldier who died in Fort Sumter, and recently was honored in my town, and finally, the last segment will be about a solider, or soldiers that just returned from Iraq. Tune in to 88.5FM Flossmoor
Saturday, August 23, 2003 12:57am-BIG NEWS!!! Close Up will begin airing in a couple of weeks. Starting on the Tuesday after this coming up Tuesday at 6:00pm. Besides it airing at that time, Close Up will be rebroadcasted later in the week if anyone missed or wanted to hear the Tuesday episode again. The wheels are turning people!!!
I also have some decent news, not great, but decent. The Close Up opener is playing once again on this page. The part that makes it decent news is that it doesn't sound great. To hear it, I recommend turning up your speakers, and then push play.
This coming up week, I will begin looking for Close Up announcers. I'm still deciding whether I should record the announcers on Close Up as opposed to having them talk live. I'm leaning towards recording them, but I'll make a decision on that soon. If you have any questions or comments regarding Close Up, please feel free to email me at SeanCPow@hotmail.com. I'll keep you all posted on any major news dealing with Close Up.
Tuesday, August 19, 2003 2:43am-Some good news and bad news. The good news, school starts tomorrow which begins what I like to call "the process". "The process" is everything that will be happening this year for radio and tv. For starters, the premiere of Close Up.
Now the bad news. Unfortunatly, the Close Up opener sound file has been disabled hopefully temporarily. I'll release more information about Close Up as I know about it including information for announcers and airings of each episode. Stay tuned!
Saturday, July 26, 2003 1:56am-Friday was the last day of summer school, and even though I did not complete everything for Close Up that I had anticipated, the overall summer school broadcasting experience was very productive, and much more fun the second time around. I completed 5 radio segments, and two video segments (one of which will air on VTV). I created my Close Up opener which can now be listened to on this site (NOTE: You need to have Quicktime or RealOne player to listen to it). I learned some new skills with the radio and television editing equipment, and mort importantly, I recognized the importance of editing. So, overall, it was a very productive 6 weeks. I'm going to be working on at least 2 more video and radio segments before school starts in August, but won't begin editing until after school begins. In fact, my next interviews are Monday and Tuesday, and even though I won't disclose any information regarding the interviews for this story, I will say this, "Both the interviews and the story are HUGE."
P.S. I know I said I would play Close Up segments on WHFH during the last week of summer school, but I didn't just because it was more hectic in the station than I thought it would be, and I just didn't have time to do it. Sorry.
Wednesday, July 16, 2003 9:45pm-Today was an eventful day. I was working with some of the new software that the station got this summer. I'm starting to really enjoy working on VTV segments. It's so much easier making video segment than it was a year ago. I'm currently making a VTV video countdown that will air before each video segment. Today, I aired my first ever broadcasted radio segment for Close Up, and the new Close Up opener. The segment was on the Caribou Coffee chain. I realized after airing it,I need to change it a bit before I air it for Close Up. For the next week, I will air one Close Up segment on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11:00 and 12:00. Also, once again if you have any thoughts regarding Close Up, you can email me or call me at the station at (708) 798-9434. Thanks
PS I'm going to try to put the Close Up opener on this site so you can listen to it.
Friday, July 11, 2003 2:53pm-I never thought it would ever happen, but it has...I made a VTV (Viking Television) segment this week. I always figured that I would only do radio segments. After doing this television segment, my whole attitude towards television broadcasting has changed. Last summer, all I did was make video segments. After a year of broadcasting, I suppose I have learned more about television and radio than I did the year before. Also, this year, VTV has ordered new TV editing equipment. Now, we have new software and computers that produce very professional video segments. It just comes to show you that the VBC (Viking Broadcasting Company) is important to many, and will continue to be important for generations to come.
Thursday, July 3, 2003 2:38pm-I am now halfway through with summer school. For the past three weeks I have made several radio segments for Close Up, and I might air them sometime during the next three weeks. Also, I’ve made a Close Up show opener with the help of several young ladies and the music of Madonna. I have also made a couple IBs for Close Up. My two goals for Close Up are to have an exceptional news show, and a larger audience. If you have any ideas for Close Up, you can call me at the radio station Mondays-Fridays from 8am-1pm central time at (708) 798-9434. Thanks
Thursday, June 19, 2003 8:03pm-I've been in summer school for a week now. I'm taking radio for six weeks. During that time, my goal is to make 18 radio segments for Close Up. To meet this goal, I plan to complete 3 segments per week. The first week is about over, and I have so far stayed on track. I've already completed my first 3 segments. I'm not sure whether or not I'll air them on the radio prior to Close Up. If I do, it will be sometime between 11:10am-12:30pm. This is when I engineer on the radio. Once again the station number is 88.5FM. Hope you tune in. If you want to contact me at the station call (708) 798-9434. I'll be at the station Mondays thru Fridays from 8:00am-1:00pm. Thanks. Keep listening. P.S. If you have any ideas for radio segments, please tell me.
Friday, May 9, 2003 1:14am-Last night on Thursday May 8, 2003, the broadcasting banquet was held Ravisloe Country Club in Homewood. It was my first time attending the banquet, and I have to say it was an experience I’ll never forget. The evening began with a lovely meal. Later on, Mr. Comstock talked about the seniors in Broadcasting Seminar who will be graduating soon. Around 8:00pm, awards were presented to outstanding broadcasting students. The biggest awards given were the doc awards. Cynthia Perry received first place on her doc, Adam Mesirow received second place on his, and Mike Strein got third place on his. After the doc awards were given out, the graduating broadcasting students gave speeches on their experiences in broadcasting at HF. Cara Mack started off the speeches with an emotional and heartwarming speech. The saddest speeches given were by Scott Adametz, and Melissa Culbertson. They contributed a lot to WHFH and VTV, and it was obvious that they have a lot of good memories that they’ll cherish forever. After the speeches, the most important part of the evening began, the distribution of jobs for next year. I was shaking like a schoolgirl on her wedding day hoping I would become the new Community Affairs Director. As it turned out, I am now the Community Affairs Director for the 2003-2004 school year! Although, I’m thinking about changing my job name to “Emperor of Community Affairs”. This position is one that means a lot to me. Not only will I be able to work on Close Up, but also I’ll be the head of Close Up. I see great things for this news show. I’ll also be the head of Politics Now. Over the summer, I’ll be working on news segments for Close Up that will air sometime during the upcoming school year. I’m looking forward to an exciting year.
P.S. This site won’t be updated a lot until Close Up actually begins to air. I’m going to create an archive page for all the episodes of Close Up with info about the segments that air.
